Sun protection, the experts' advice: the product manager

THE PRODUCT MANAGERS' ADVICE:
Fréderic Cobb, Tribord boardsports product manager

How does the top offer better protection than a simple cotton t-shirt on the beach and in the water?
Unlike a cotton t-shirt which loses its effectiveness once wet (the fibres sag with the water's weight and allow UV rays to pass through), the sun protection top, made of 80% polyamide and 20% elastane, offers a minimum UPF 40 both wet and dry.
Indeed, the tight weave of the polyamide and elastane fibres offers a 95% filter from the sun's UV rays. The top also helps to avoid rashes and rubbing caused by contact with the bodyboard.
Does the colour affect its performance in terms of sun protection?
Darker colours protect better than light colours as they block the sun's rays better. If you can see light through the top, UV rays can also pass through it. However, all colours of Profilter Tops guarantee a minimum UPF protection of 40.

How does a UV protect T-shirt offer better sun protection than a simple cotton t-shirt on the beach?
The UV protect t-shirt offers more effective protection from the sun than a simple cotton t-shirt. The closer fabric weave blocks out 95% of UV rays and gives a UPF 40+ rating (European standard EN 13 758-1), but still offers the same soft feel and the comfort of cotton.
